GitHub Copilot app adds project-level local sandboxing

GitHub released public-preview local sandboxing for Copilot app sessions working against local repositories. Per-project policy can restrict filesystem paths, outbound and local-network access, and Git or GitHub CLI credentials; a session fails closed when the operating system cannot enforce the requested policy.

Why it mattersLocal coding agents can execute commands with a developer's ambient access. Sandboxing narrows the blast radius, but it is off by default and separate from cloud or remote sessions, so engineering teams must enable it deliberately and test the effective policy on each supported operating system.

Copilot code review gains personal and enterprise effort controls

GitHub made a dedicated code-review settings page available across Copilot plans. Developers can automatically review new pull requests, draft pull requests and new pushes, while enterprise administrators can set an inherited default review effort for organization-owned repositories.

Why it mattersAI review depth is now a configurable engineering control rather than an ad-hoc prompt choice. Platform leaders can establish a cost-and-quality baseline, while repositories retain overrides for higher-risk code paths.

GitHub Actions removes Node 20 and enforces Node 24

GitHub Actions runners now use Node 24 for JavaScript actions, and the temporary opt-out that allowed the retired Node 20 runtime is gone. Action maintainers must publish releases with `runs.using: node24`; macOS 13.4-and-earlier and ARM32 self-hosted runners are no longer supported by this runtime transition.

Why it mattersAction runtime metadata is a production dependency. Teams should update pinned third-party actions, rebuild internal JavaScript actions and inventory unsupported self-hosted runners before a CI failure blocks delivery.

Apigee API hub adds AWS and Azure discovery plugins

Google Cloud launched public-preview plugins that ingest API metadata from AWS API Gateway and Azure API Management into Apigee API hub. The integrations support automated discovery, six-hour pull synchronization and optional event-driven updates; API hub also made specification-to-deployment linkage and gateway-revision tracking generally available.

Why it mattersMulti-cloud API governance fails when inventories drift from deployed gateways. Automated reconciliation and revision-aware mappings give platform teams a stronger basis for ownership, compliance and change-impact analysis across providers.

Cloud KMS previews zero-downtime external-key migration

Google Cloud KMS added preview support for creating new external-key versions with either EXTERNAL or EXTERNAL_VPC protection and changing an existing external key version's protection level without application reconfiguration or downtime.

Why it mattersExternal-key connectivity is often difficult to change once applications depend on it. In-place protection-level migration can reduce operational risk during HSM, network or provider transitions, though preview status still calls for staged testing and rollback evidence.
